Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21
This young man had many reasons to be happy: social status, material goods... he lived an exemplary life. He kept God’s commandments since he was a child. The story tells us that upon seeing him, Jesus “loved him”. This love with which Jesus saw the young man with revealed to him what was holding the young man back from eternal life. Not only was the problem revealed, but so was the solution: “sell all of your belongings and give it to the poor and you shall have treasures in heaven and follow me.”
That message applies to us as well! Jesus sees us and he loves us, and he wants to show us what’s holding us back. For the young man in the story, his possessions were standing between him and God. In our case, what is so hard to give up that it’s holding us back from following God? What should
you abandon in order to get closer to God? It is my prayer that you allow God, He who loves you, to speak to you through love and that you may listen so that revelations may occur. What are you missing? In addition, I pray that you do not repeat the same mistake the young man made... Due to his love of possessions and wealth, sadly walked away from Jesus with a conflicted heart. It’s not about earning eternal life, like the young man saw it, but it’s about having the faith to follow Jesus. It’s about cutting off whatever tethers us to this world and that which inhibits us from consecrating our lives to Jesus. It’s about allowing Jesus to not only be Savior of our lives, but also Lord of our lives.
With love in Christ, Pastor Eva.
